Three years back, that a 16-year-old Bianca Andreescu wrote herself a fake cheque.
This tact has been a mock-up of this one awarded to the US Open champion.
Now, after beating the amazing Serena Williams 6-3 7-5 at Saturday’s compelling closing, the composed Canadian is ready to cash a genuine one value about #3.1m.
„I’ve been dreaming of this moment for the longest period,“ that the 19-year-old said of winning her first Grand Slam title, wiping tears away as the magnitude of what she’d just achieved finally struck.
„For this to become a fact is mad.“
Crazy is a phrase that Andreescu, like many teenagers, readily uses to describe conditions that are unexpected and one that has consumed regularly with the media within the last couple of days.
Not without reason.
Struggling with injury and twelve months ago, she lost in the first round of qualifying in Flushing Meadows and has been ranked outside of the top 200 at the world.
But she has come to be among the most players in the world after having a remarkable rise this season.
Andreescu, whose Romanian parents Nicu and Maria emigrated to Canada in the 1990s, had only played matches .
Since then she’s won prestigious WTA Premier titles at Indian Wells and Toronto, climbing to 15th on the planet because of this and raking in 1.79m of her 1.97m livelihood prize money.
Now the gains are even higher after getting a Grand Slam winner: she will climb to fifth in the world, take home a winning prize of 3.13m and, surely, become a face recognised by most outside of those parameters Canada and golfing.
„I never actually thought of becoming famous. I am not complaining though,“ she smiled.
„My goals are to win as many Grand Slams as you can, become number one on the planet. However, the idea of fame not crossed my mind.
„It’s been a crazy ride this past year. I can definitely get used to the atmosphere “
And the prize money? „Don’t ask me that because I have no clue. I have never held that money in my entire life!“
Succumbing to the trappings of fame and wealth at a young age looks unlikely for the hot adolescent, that has been nurtured an engineer by dad Nicu, and mother also a chief compliance officer to get a fund firm, Maria.
Maria herself has become a favorite figure, particularly among networking users, thanks to bold fashion statements, her striking appearance and as she attracts Andreescu , Coco, to sit on her lap through games.
Andreescu, an only child, describes her as“the coolest person I know and my character model“.
She has her mother to thank for helping develop the psychological resilience which she had to block a passionate home crowd at Flushing Meadows as Williams threatened to spoil her hopes.
„I started meditating and visualising ever since I was 12 or 13 if my mom introduced me, and that I understand it was not such a big thing back then, but today it is getting more popular since I think if you’re able to control your head, then you can control a great deal of things,“ she explained.
„I think that’s what’s been working very well for me. I kept doing that.
„When I’m on the court in front of those huge stages, I’m really good at just blocking everything and remaining in the zone.“
Belief is not something Andreescu has in short supply, exemplified by the way she struts along together with her mind constantly up – on the Arthur Ashe Stadium that is cavernous, in her very first Grand – across the court.
And that assurance dissipates at as having a killer forehand rated among the finest in the game, as well a marvellous all-round game which has the variety to pull against enemies apart.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion rated as the best player ever, williams, could not cope with the consistent depth of the teenager as she was hustled out of a record-equalling leading.
„I really feel like Bianca performs well under stress. She goes outside and she plays hard,“ that the 37-year-old said.
„She does what she does , and that is move until the ball, that’s hit winners, so that is play with a whole lot of intensity“
Andreescu had earned six wins above top-10 players this year – Caroline Wozniacki, Elina Svitolina, Angelique Kerber (twice), Kiki Bertens and Karolina Pliskova – entering Saturday’s final.
And Williams, that led from their Rogers Cup final in Toronto before the American retired with a back injury, became the most recent victim.
This implies Andreescu has won 14 straight matches and also an outstanding 45 of her 49 matches this season.
She’s the first teenager to raise a Grand Slam singles title because Maria Sharapova won the 2006 US Open aged 19 and matched Monica Seles‘ list of winning a big in the Open era on just her fourth appearance.
A dream-like year has not been without its own challenges, Even though the rise of Andreescu was rapid.
She missed a large chunk of the season after suffering a shoulder injury in the Miami Open at March that, following an ill-judged attempt to perform the French Open, compelled her to miss the whole grass-court swing, making her swift ascent and formidable winning album even more remarkable.
„It is undoubtedly a practice of existence. You’re not likely to have ups all of the time,“ she explained.
„So I believe in these minutes, you simply need to deal with it the best you possibly can, which is to just keep fighting your fantasies and just stay as continuous and persevere as much as possible.
„I know in these moments you really feel as if you can not.
„However, if you believe there are great times ahead, then these difficult moments are certainly well worth it. I think you are built by it .
„I believe everyone ought to go through it because it only makes you stronger.“
