American gold medalists reprimanded after protests at Pan American Games

(CNN) — The two US athletes that exhibited throughout independent National Anthems at a regional sports contest earlier this month have now been placed on probation for 12 months.
US Olympic & Paralympic Committee Chief Executive Officer Sarah Hirshland composed to hammer thrower Gwen Berry and fencer Hurry Imboden, saying“while I respect your perspective — and that of each athlete for whom I’m lucky enough to serve — I disagree with all the moment and manner in which you chose to express your views.“
All participants signed agreements not to make any political, religious, or racial opinion at Lima, Peru in the Pan American Games.
Hirshland’s letter warned the two athletes another signal violation could result in“more serious sanctions“ than for a athlete in good standing.
Both athletes can participate in events. Berry will participate in the entire world track and field championships a month.
CNN has achieved during their sports federations to Berry and Imboden but neither individual responded instantly.
Berry’s representative told CNN she is not performing interviews and wishes to concentrate on her instruction.
„She needs no distractions because her goal is to medal for the USA in the women’s hammer, a thing which has never been achieved before,“ John Nubani wrote in an email to CNN.
Following her demonstration of a raised fist, then she told track and field website FloTrack:“I understand exactly everything I did, and that I know I broke the rules, and I will make that sacrifice. I am honored to make that sacrifice.“

After he knelt Imboden stated:“We have to call for modification. I am honored to represent Team USA at the Pan Am Games, carrying home gold and 20, this week. My pride nevertheless was cut short by the nation that I hold dear in my heart’s multiple shortcomings. Racism, gun control, mistreatment of immigrants, and a president who spreads hatred are at the peak of a list.
„I chose to (forfeit ) my moment now near the peak of the podium to call attention to issues that I think have to be addressed. I encourage other people to please utilize your platforms for change and empowerment,“ he said.
Imboden, 26, is ranked as the world’s second-best from the transparency event, and won a bronze medal in the men’s individual foil. He helped the US win gold in the men’s foil team occasion.
Since Imboden knelt, Nick Itkin and his Gerek Meinhardt stood.
She raised her fist in the air , and berry took gold in the women’s hammer throw and bowed her in the conclusion of the National Anthem in protest. It was a demonstration reminiscent of John Carlos and Tommie Smith in the 1968 Olympics.
„Somebody must stand for all the injustices that are happening in America and a president who’s making it worse,“ she told USA Today. „It’s too important not to say something.“
The probationary period could include the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, which start July 24.
