American gold medalists reprimanded after protests at Pan American Games

(CNN) — The two US athletes who exhibited throughout independent National Anthems in a regional sports contest earlier this month have now been put on probation for 12 weeks.
US Olympic & Paralympic Committee Chief Executive Officer Sarah Hirshland wrote to hammer thrower Gwen Berry and fencer Race Imboden, saying“while I respect your perspective — and that of every athlete for whom I’m lucky enough to function — I disagree with the moment and way in which you chose to express your views.“
All participants signed agreements not to make any political, religious, or racial comment in Lima, Peru at the Pan American Games.
Hirshland’s letter cautioned the 2 athletes another signal violation could result in“more severe sanctions“ compared to an athlete in good position.
Both athletes can participate in events that are sanctioned. Berry will get involved in the world track and field championships every month.
CNN has reached out during their sports federations to Berry and Imboden but neither individual responded.
Berry’s agent told CNN that she isn’t doing interviews and would like to concentrate on her instruction.
„She needs no distractions as her goal is to medal to the USA in the women’s hammer, a thing which has never been done before,“ John Nubani composed in an email to CNN.
After her demonstration of a raised fist, then she advised track and field site FloTrack:“I understand everything I did, and then now I know I broke the rules, and I’ll make that sacrifice. I’m honored to make this sacrifice“
While they all were on a medal podium, berry increased her fist in the air and bowed her head and Imboden knelt.
Taking a knee during the national anthem became a form of protest following former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick first hauled then took a knee against people of colour during the 2016 soccer period in protest of police brutality and injustice during the National Anthem.
Ever since then, numerous athletes, to soccer superstar Megan Rapinoe to amateur schoolers, from NFL players have knelt as a form of protest, sparking anger from others and Trump.
After he knelt Imboden stated:“We have to call for modification. This week I am honored to represent Team USA in the Pan Am Games, taking home silver and gold. My pride was cut short by the various shortcomings of the nation that I hold dear to my heart. Racism, gun control, a president who spreads hatred, and also mistreatment of immigrants are on peak of a listing.
„I chose to (forfeit ) my moment now at the top of the podium to call attention to issues that I believe have to be addressed. I encourage others to please use your programs for empowerment and change,“ he said.
Imboden won a bronze medal on Tuesday at the men’s individual foil, and is rated as the world’s second-best in the foil event. He also helped the US win gold.
Since Imboden knelt, Nick Itkin and his teammates Gerek Meinhardt stood.
Berry took gold in the women’s hammer throwand she raised her fist in the air and bowed her in protest at the end of the National Anthem. It was a protest reminiscent of John Carlos and Tommie Smith in the 1968 Olympics.
„Somebody must stand for each of the injustices that are happening in America and a president who’s making it worse,“ she told USA Today. „It is too important not to say something.“
The period would incorporate the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, which start.
