American gold medalists reprimanded after protests at Pan American Games

(CNN) — Both US athletes that demonstrated during separate National Anthems at a regional sports competition earlier this month have been put on probation for 12 weeks.
US Olympic & Paralympic Committee Chief Executive Officer Sarah Hirshland wrote to hammer thrower Gwen Berry and fencer Hurry Imboden, stating“while I admire your view — and of each athlete to whom I’m lucky enough to function — that I disagree with the moment and manner in which you chose to convey your views.“
All participants signed agreements to not create some political, religious, or racial remark at Lima, Peru at the Pan American Games.
Hirshland’s letter cautioned the 2 athletes another code violation could result in“more severe sanctions“ than for an athlete in good standing.
Both athletes can participate in events that are sanctioned. Berry will take part in the world track and field championships a month in Doha, Qatar.
CNN has reached out through their sport federations to Berry and Imboden but individual responded immediately.
The representative of berry would like to focus on her training and told CNN interviews are not being done by her.
„She wants no distractions because her objective is to medal to the USA at the women’s hammer, a thing that has never been done before,“ John Nubani wrote in an email to CNN.
After her demonstration of a raised fist, she advised track and field website FloTrack:“I understand exactly what I did, and then I know I broke the rules, and I’ll make that sacrifice. I’m honored to make this sacrifice“
Berry bowed her mind and Imboden knelt while they all were on a ribbon podium and increased her fist in the air.
Taking a knee turned into a form of protest after former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick first hauled took a knee during the National Anthem against people of color throughout the 2016 football season in protest of police brutality and injustice.
Ever since that time, many athletes, out of NFL players, to football superstar Megan Rapinoe to amateur schoolers have knelt sparking anger from many others and Trump.
Following he knelt Imboden said:“We must call for change. This week I am honored to represent Team USA in the Pan Am Games, carrying bronze and home gold. My pride however was cut short by the shortcomings of this country that I hold dear to my heart. Racism, gun control, a president that spreads hatred, and mistreatment of immigrants are at the top of a very lengthy list.
„I chose to (sacrifice) my second today near the top of the podium to listen to problems that I think need to be addressed. I encourage others to please utilize your platforms for change and empowerment,“ he explained.
Imboden, 26, won a bronze medal at the men’s individual foil on Tuesday, also is ranked as the world’s second-best from the transparency event. He helped the US win gold in the men’s foil team occasion.
As knelt, Nick Itkin and his Gerek Meinhardt stood.
Berry took gold in the women’s hammer throwand she raised her fist in the air and bowed her in the end of the National Anthem in protest. It was a demonstration reminiscent of John Carlos and Tommie Smith in the 1968 Olympics.
„Somebody has to stand for all the injustices which are happening in America and also a president who is making it more challenging,“ she told USA Today. „It is too important not to say something.“
The period would incorporate the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, which start.
