Eddie Jones changes in the week after his England negative and his native Australia: more animated, more populous play , up earlier and to bed by his criteria that are workaholic.
That game falls along with his reputation as England coach inclined to be defined that which may follow and by what happens in the Oita Stadium on Saturday, in the quarter-finals of a World Cup that has been ramped up still.
Theres the training rivalry: the former Randwick hooker, Jones , up former Randwick number eight, from Michael Cheika. Theres what a win would imply: a World Cup semi-final more. That is what overcome might cause: the end of a regime, a reappraisal of all it was built on.
Both coaches have amazed – Jones by giving a 19-year-old a run at center and dropping George Kruis and George Ford by changing his matching.
Neither man is very likely to happen to be bothered in the least. They share a home town and bar, but in addition a deep-rooted desire.
You cant only make a flippant comment with Eddie, states Stirling Mortlock, the prior Wallabies skipper who played Jones for country and franchise.
If you are going to say something, you want to have any stats behind it and you also will need to have some conviction. Otherwise youll be called by him out straight away -mate, that is incorrect; bang, bang, bang.
I dont know whether I was fearful of Eddie, however, certainly after being trained by him for a lengthy period of time, you know that what he wants is everybody to try to get better, day in, day out. And if you are not doing this, thats a problem straight away.
If you are doing that, then he is going to say, lets work in your rugby intellect, or let us do other things off the area. He wants to see people .
He is always looking at the global dynamic of where the match is going. Hell tear up that with stats, he will debunk any other view until he is clear on where he would like to move and what type of people he needs to grow that.
Jones starting XV is big, powerful, packed with ball-carriers that are strong, based around a set-piece that is rock-solid.
Ford, arguably Englands greatest player in their own three wins, has been gone sent to the bench as Owen Farrell is changed to 10 from inside center. Anywhere you look is energy, muscle and snarl.
Australia used to prefer contrasting methods. Four years ago their march into the World Cup final was founded on quick-thinking and the guile of both Bernard Foley and Matt Giteau. That closely the Jones manner: a scrum along with line-out that is a weapon rather than weakness has been followed by this time around Cheika, 17 stone of Samu Kerevi at 6ft 3ins of Jordan Petaia.
As a playerCheik absolutely did all of his talking out on the field, states Mortlock. He was incredibly combative, almost a thug about the pitch.
One of my very first games was contrary to Randwick, his brothers. And you also didnt really wish to go near the Cheika brothers.
I was a young full-back having a complete head of hair, and off a midfield scrum-play I stepped back to Cheik and acquired a great broken nose for my troubles.
I feel as if as a coach and leader, he can not help but default to that real ardent character.
He cant bash people any more, he cant catch up that bodily mind of steam. So its very tough for him. He would like to rent a couple of expletives out, but he cant so he has all to keep it in tight.
What hes very good at is getting players to respect him, immensely, and to trust him, and to believe in him.
I have no doubt in my head that players really like to play Cheik, since they feel as if they are going to lose, they will be disappointed they have let their coach down. And thats a good place to start.
He always challenges the status quo. He is very good in saying, why do we do things like this, and why are we on the aspect of the room that is changing? Hell challenge it and alter it When there isnt a reason.
Thats the mindset hes brought to the Australian group – significantly altering their match only three months from a World Cup.
Many people would be thinking,my goodness, why do you do so? Hes probably thinking, why did we wait so long?
Jones would railing against the concept that hes feeling under some pressure certainly any pressure hes not relishing, or out here.
However there were signs all the same – an irritability occasionally in his deals with a few pieces of the press, people rips, albeit it blinked out, when talking about his hopes to the group at the start or the recent passing of the former Randwick coach and mentor Jeff Sayle.
Win on Saturday with the authority the same team achieved in the victory over Ireland at Dublin in February, march on to a likely semi-final interview together with the All Blacks with a staff thats fit and shooting, and he will feel as though the entire world is clinging to his will once again.
Fall brief, having placed such a premium over the World Cup throughout his four irregular years in charge, and a number of the previous critiques will emerge again: that his obsession with detail wears out his backroom team and players, that his force of character intimidates some others in the team, that such conviction from one vocal crowds out the creativity elsewhere.
You can not always have good shape, so Eddie will drive you, says Mortlock.
That happened to me – in about 2005, I had an average year. He and I agreed that I had however I stood up for myself and explained, its my job so I can prove that I am prepared to move to do the work off the pitch.
And after I did that, it was almost like he was slapping me on the back and joking with me and what else.
He has an absolute mild heart when it comes to rugby. He is a pig in mud if he is performing a heap of kids or a training clinic with other coaches. He absolutely loves this sport of ours.
Jones has ever backed himself. Today England are going to discover if hes perfect.
